Jenny Promotional Ideas

Admittedly a rather dated example of what I want to produce, but the concept is there. I think that the best route to go with the brief would be to produce a relatively low-cost mailout that can be easily recreated by herself. Obviously the branding will have to work across the entire range of deliverables, so far I'm thinking: invoice sheet, postcards, business card, letterheads (despite their lack of functionality in this day and age), envelope and some form of interactive element.
The envelope on on the top image is a really cool idea, so I could have 2 envelopes with her logo working across both of the mailouts. The format for the mailout will be something around or about the format for the postcards so probably round 110 x 155mm or something similar.
I thought the composition of the image is the sort of thing I would be using throughout the final board photos for submission. Double whammy really.

Just had a good idea with the transparent stock such as acetate or tracing paper; The mailout could have all the gubbins inside, but the first thing you pull out is the logo applied centrally,  the viewfinder highlights a certain section/part of the images in her portfolio, giving potential employers a free print and something interesting to hold on to.

Looking particularly at the envelope/mailout at the bottom of the image, where the format is small and compact, which also potentially means that one could mass produce them so Jenny is not limited to just one to give out herself. I like the stock and the arrangement that leaves enough space to fit in a whole host of interesting deliverables. Magick.

2920: Method and Production

Due to the fact that hand in is drawing in much too quickly for me to deal with, I have decided that my bookmaking skills are poor enough to qualify myself to buy my way to success in terms of the end product. This is rationalised by the fact it is so near to the end of the course and I want at least a week to sort everything out for the show and whatnot.
James offered a bookbinding service that is next to none in terms of producing premium quality work. Spink and Thackray in Leeds, offer a whole load of bespoke bookcrafting services, although not the cheapest, I didnt want to duck out on quality, so I am willing to pay the price. Taking into account I have to screenprint and hand foil the map of Tamriel as well as waiting for my blacksmith to finish my draft dagger.

SO, in summary,

2920: The Last Year of the First Era - Perfect Bound B5 hardback with red, or black bookrum cloth, foiled cover with off white 100/140 gsm stock for the body copy

Pocket Guide to the Empire - Perfect bound A5 hardback with embossed cover, same stock for body copy

Tamriel World Map - Screenprinted A1 print, with foild blocked compass in bottom left corner

Morag Tong Deathnote - Screenprinted on hand made paper 230 gsm from screenprinting

Morag Tong Dagger - Brass casting

Presentation Box - Varnished/worn wood, clasp cast in iron

Mister Millerchip

Once again an illustrator to add to the pile.... but seriously Millerchip's mural work is something I would greatly like to be involved with after the course, meeting new people and contacts whilst having a laugh and doing something creative to break the monotony! His work relates directly to what I have been trying to do: create an easily identifiable character style. The B&W palette he uses makes his work stronger, since all good images should be able to function without colour (in some instances). The mural I want to propose feeds directly into this as well.

Promo inspiration

Just thought I needed some good starting imagery in regards to producing some form of promotional mailout for Jenny, something not overly complicated, yet interesting eanough for the audience to engage with.

PRESENTATION

Just thought I would post both of them together to see differences in information, content and flow. Generally an improvement, although feedback was mixed in terms of how professional the overall presentation went and in regards to my leaving strategy.

Lorenzo commented that it was lacking in terms of how a professional would present themselves, something I generally have not improved on in terms of quick turnaround presentations in front of the other course members. I will however, rectify this if the context were one of professional endeavour, despite this comment alone denoting an air of flippancy on my part, which is not the case, just poor time management rearing its ugly head twixt the eyes of foresight.
On a more positive note, my strategy was received well and people were generally interested to see what my ambitions above and beyond the course are. It also allowed me to have more of an insight into people I will be keeping on my contact roll after completing the course, despite the increasing plausibility of not being able to hand in a decent quality/quantity of work.

Jenny: Draft one

Jenny Sneap: Ideas and generation, to be screenprinted: spot varnished or foil blocked depending on the size of the final design and client preference.
Jenny gave me a statement related to her practice and a link to her site, she believes her work has an air of mystery, which is why I will be making a subtle print finish the underlying concept for her brief as well as the driving force.

Eureka is coming to a satisfying close...

AFter much deliberation and a huge gap in development I have started on the LUCA story and how to effectively communicate the story and make it more engaging and visually stimulating. I dont think I have done very well so far, but the colour combinations are coming along quite nicely. I think I will try to keep a more rigid colour palette as I get on with this brief to tie it together and make it my own.

2920: Update

This is the rough layout and full content for the Pocket Guide to The Empire, I still need to fully illustrate the map and get some real layout ideas nailed down, but there is so much content its hard to get to grips with quickly in such a short time.
I am not sure if I will carry this on yet due to the nature of the brief and its content, but I will try ouf a few more layouts to see if I can get it looking anywhere near final.

I tried out some more fonts as I need to decide on it swiftly in order to progress with the brief. I took the liberty of vector tracing the Empire's emblem of the dragon that would be part of a range of logos to apply to deliverables for the brief. The fonts I used were a mixture of web and game fonts: MaryJane Caps, Oldstyle HPSP and Planewalker were used. I personally think it is a choice between Planewalker and the Oldstyle family due to the nature of the brief and the general style and shape of the type.

Cheekily included some pocket guide research, worryingly, I discovered that Bethesda had already released one, so I am questioning the reasons behind redesigning it for the reason that it is already an existing product and dont want to get sued or anything like that. It has given me reason not to use Planewalker as they have used it throughout the Pocket Guide.

Have managed to compile and begin trudging through the entire 2920 series, with each chapter respectfully noted. Taken me ages to go through and patch up the story but I think I have done a good job. I have sort of decided on formats for the brief: B5 for the main 2920 book due to the size being about the right size it appears in game but also because I have not really used B formats before and they seem highly appropriate for book design.

From Concrete to Canvas....

I re-read one of my bookshelf classics today, From Concrete to Canvas, which documents the skaters transition from doodler to artist to illustrator. I forgot how much this book influenced me in terms of illustrative style and approach to composition when drawing. There are two illustrators who I think are incredible at what they do and have stuck with me for the past 2 years.

Mr Gauky
Jeremy Fish
Michael Sieben

They influence my practice by their often twisted imagery smoothed over by a well presented illustration, that has potential to sell for fine art prices as their individual practices have moved on, especially in Jeremy Fish's case. Gauky has an aesthetic I would love to match but that would take much time on my own part, but Sieben is my main man so to speak. His work and style is distinct enough to have an application across magazine/editorial with the ability to transfer to merchandise. The reason why I chose the skateboards and merch in his work is because I will be pursuing a brief after the course which involves a local skate park, their branding and merchandise/painting opportunities.  This will be better explained in my DC presentation.

Skyrim: Guide to Empire

2920: Drafts and notes

Open publication - Free publishing

Just some quick ideas to get me thinking about what sort of dagger would compliment the book, whilst having a mass appeal to my intended audience. Also I needed to clarify the deliverables for the brief, so I didnt confuse myself further down the line and inevitably waste time.

2920 Brief

Open publication - Free publishing

So the results so far from my survey (after 13 minutes of being posted) has yielded conclusive enough results as to how I should progress with the brief. Basically, the 2920 historical tome would be the most appropriate in terms of deliverables and whatnot. The guide seems to be a popular item, which drives me to conclude the first book binding attempt should be based around this to practice the technique and hopefully gain something professional looking.
I will be posting another survey to enquire if one volume would be suffice as opposed to 3 bound books, as it would be undertaking a monumentous task to create 3 up to a decent standard considering my current knowledge/experience of bookmaking.
I have contacted my blacksmith and he is on board for the project.

These are some initial type ideas for the books I will be producing.  I wanted the year to be a major feature on the cover, as the content dictates the title also, I wanted to capitalise on the fact that it is the year is intrinsic to the game, as well as the players who sing its praises. I dont want anything too decorative in case it loses all sense of readability and legibility. For the body copy, I do need to consider the period the game is set (loosely based in historical know-how) roughly 14th/16th century, which means that I will need a serif typeface to portray the historical value as accurately as possible. This takes into account how close the typeface needs to be in terms of game-wrodl accuracy as well.

Zelda Zine

Corey Schimdtz

Really cool individual who runs a zine from USA but it is published in Nottingham at GameCity, as huge community of nerds and fanboys eager to create game related work to sell and exhibit around the globe. Corey is a mature designer, his general aesthetic is how I would be approaching a few of my briefs. He has a cargo and I have started to follow him, to see what else he produces.
